The Russian air defense system has learned how to shoot down hypersonic missiles. Tests of the new S-300V4 anti-aircraft missile systems with new ammunition, designed to destroy ballistic missiles and hypersonic warheads, took place at the Kapustin Yar missile range in the Astrakhan region . Experimental exercises were carried out in conditions close to those of combat and were considered to be successful.

During the S-300V4 air defense systems test run at the Kapustin Yar test site, 40 clustered and single targets were destroyed at altitudes up to 35 kilometers. The target range was 3 to 50 kilometers. It is reported that the conditions under which the shooting was carried out were as close as possible to the actual combat situation. According to the results of the launches, specialists came to the conclusion that the complex is capable of ensuring the destruction of tactical short and medium-range missiles, as well as long-range hypersonic missile units. This quality has become possible thanks to the new ammunition, which itself is capable of accelerating to hypersonic speeds and can hit targets at distances of up to 400 kilometers. Improved ammunition will be guaranteed to take down all air ballistic targets. For example, very maneuverable warheads mounted on missiles, capable of altering the flight path on approach to the object of attack, making it difficult to defeat them.

The S-300V4 is considered a revolutionary defense system against any type of air attack. This air defense system can protect troops and important objects from any type of air attack. The complex has proven itself particularly well in combating missiles on downward trajectories. The capabilities of this air defense system cover an area 2-3 times larger against air strikes than the classic “three hundred” can. Thanks to this, the area of ​​destruction of air targets is larger. The new systems are guaranteed to intercept medium-range missile warheads. As part of the air defense system, there are also special narrow-orientation radars and launchers capable of striking ballistic missiles.

The first S-300V4 entered the troops in 2014. The air defense missile system includes a command post, radar stations for various purposes, self-propelled launchers and launchers, as well as anti-aircraft guided missiles of several types.

The improved S-300V4 system received fully digital equipment capable of simultaneously tracking 24 aerodynamic targets, including stealth objects, or 16 ballistic missiles. The S-300V4 are in service in all military districts. The first brigade was formed in the Krasnodar Territory in 2014. In the Central Military District, the S-300V4 took up combat duties in the Samara region and in the Moscow region. They were also deployed in the Kaliningrad region. Last year, S-300V4 air defense systems entered service on the islands of the Kuril Ridge. In October 2016, the S-300V4 Systems Division was deployed to Syria and took up combat duties to protect Khmeimim Airfield and Tartus Navy Logistics Center.
