The new version of the “Sprut-SDM1” landing on the basis of the BMD-4, it received a new power plant, an information and control system for the chassis, a new sighting system, improved electronics and modern software and hardware. In addition, the machine is equipped with modern means of communication, which are integrated into a single tactical control system. Previously, this combat self-propelled gun successfully passed state tests at sea and in the subtropical zone and was tested at low temperatures. It was reported that the Ministry of Defense has already decided to adopt “Octopus-SDM1” up to 150 Sprut-SDM1 light tanks will be put into service with the Russian Airborne Forces. The commanders of this self-propelled anti-tank gun are currently in training.
Light tank
“Sprut-SDM1” is an updated version of the airborne self-propelled anti-tank gun “Sprut-SD”. Specialists from the Design Bureau of the Volgograd Tractor Plant (VgTZ), Yekaterinburg OKB-9 (now “Plant No. 9”) and TsNIITOCHMASH (Podolsk) worked on the machine.
Officially “Octopus” is an airborne 125mm self-propelled anti-tank gun, but in terms of firepower it is a light tank. The combat vehicle simultaneously combines shock and landing qualities that vehicles of this class do not have. Cannon “Octopus” it can be dropped with a parachute, it can swim, it is not inferior to tanks in speed, but it surpasses them in cross-country ability, including overcoming obstacles of; water, shooting in motion.
Landing
It is planned that light tanks “Sprut-SDM1” will be able to be transferred by military transport aircraft Il-76 and An-124, as well as parachute from them. In addition, the tank must be suitable for transport by Mi-26 helicopters on an external sling.
At the same time the Sprut you can parachute with the crew inside the car. In order to confirm safety, tests were carried out during which the car was thrown from a height of up to 6.15 meters. The machine has fully confirmed that it can withstand such overloads.

“Sprut-SDM1” can be delivered anywhere in the world, so the machine was originally created as an airborne installation for the airborne forces, but it can also be used for & nbsp; navies and land forces. Machine abilities allow you to fight tanks, armored vehicles, enemy manpower and destroy enemy fortresses and defensive structures. The vehicle is designed for unit fire support and for military reconnaissance and combat security.
Tonka Armor
For objective reasons «Octopus-SD» inferior to heavy tracked vehicles in terms of protection. The modest thickness of the armor is explained by the mass requirements: a heavier vehicle will be impossible to parachute from the air. At the same time, it has become much more mobile than conventional tanks, & nbsp; including due to engine installation, transmission, chassis components, chassis information and control system.
Weapons
With a mass of about 18 tons, the updated “Octopus” has a full tank 125 mm 2A75 cannon. Ammunition includes a fairly wide range of ammunition. Ammunition includes different types of ammunition: high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG), armour-piercing with a stabilized wing (APFSDS) and high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT). Of these, 22 are in the autoloader. In addition, there are up to 6 laser-guided (LGP) cartridges with a firing range of up to 5000 m. The armament kit also includes two 7.62 mm machine guns, which are mounted on a remote-controlled module. The new software and hardware complex and a highly automated digital fire control system provide detection, recognition and destruction of targets in place and in motion.
