Launch of the Atlas V rocket with the Landsat satellite in California

An Atlas V launcher equipped with a Landsat series remote sensing satellite has been successfully launched from the Vandenberg Space Force base in California. The launch took place on September 27 at 2:11 p.m. (9:11 p.m. Moscow time). It was originally scheduled for September 23, but the start was later postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

The new satellite is to replace the Landsat 7 probe, launched in April 1999, into orbit. The Landsat 9 satellite will operate in an orbit at an altitude of 705 km. It will transmit information on global climate change, monitor the situation of the planet's natural resources, including water and agricultural resources. Its equipment will allow the daily transmission of more than 700 images from the Earth's surface to the Earth.

Continuous study of the Earth's surface from orbit & mdash; a joint project of the US Geological Survey and NASA. The first of the Landsat series Earth remote sensing devices was launched in 1972.
