What kind of BAS-200 unmanned helicopter was created in Russia?

Helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicles, such as the BAS-200, have a higher power-to-weight ratio and speed than conventional aircraft-type drones, therefore, they have the prospect of becoming widespread at the both in the civilian sphere and in the military. This was said at the Mil and Kamov National Helicopter Center, where they are developing this aircraft. AiF.ru understood what the advantages of machines of this type are.

The main advantage of the BAS-200, the developers call it the power-to-weight ratio, which allows you to lift up to 50 kilograms into the air. This means that the drone, even with small sizes & nbsp; can become a support for productive articulated systems. Another advantage is the ability to fly over and a detailed survey of a certain area of the terrain. This function is necessary during reconnaissance for a more precise study of the target. The aircraft is supposed to be used to perform a wide range of aviation work: area surveillance, cargo delivery, search and rescue, and agricultural work. The drone is currently being tested to deliver packages to customers. With “Russian Post” BAS-200 is being tested for cargo delivery in Chukotka. The drone should also be used for geophysical exploration, including in hard-to-reach regions of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. This unmanned helicopter has great potential for use in the military field.

Features

The versatile BAS-200 helicopter-like drone was first shown at the air show last year. Its maximum takeoff weight — 200 kilograms, range — 400 kilometers, the maximum flight altitude is 3900 meters. The drone's rotary piston engine with a maximum power of 54 horsepower allows you to develop & nbsp; maximum speed — up to 160, and cruise — from 100 to 120 kilometers per hour, depending on the payload. The BAS-200 can stay aloft for up to four hours and carry up to 50 kilograms. The ground control complex provides communication with the device at a distance of up to 100 kilometers. Flight testing is currently underway, mass production is expected to start in 2022.

Control

This lightweight helicopter-like drone is capable of taking off from a spot – soil, transportation. Landing also does not require a large space. At the same time, modern control systems and sensors greatly simplify piloting, especially with the ability to see “from the first person”.

App

Today, several companies are engaged in the development of unmanned helicopters. For example, the Austrian firm Schiebel, which created the Camcopter. It has already been tested delivering medical supplies and ammunition to US Army units and transporting spare parts from shore to a Norwegian oil rig. The take-off weight of this aircraft — 200 kilograms, like the BAS-200, and it can also carry loads weighing up to 50 kilograms. Camcopter S-100 flies up to 180 kilometers at a speed of 190 kilometers per hour and is able to stay in the air for up to six hours.

Military tasks

Light and ultra-light helicopter-type unmanned aerial vehicles have a number of advantages, thanks to which they have gained wide popularity in various fields. So far, they are mainly used for non-military tasks, but their potential can also be useful for armies. An unmanned helicopter can carry a high-resolution reconnaissance camera or other payload, down to low-weight ammunition. The Russian Defense Ministry reported on the transfer of small batches of quadrocopters to UAV units of the southern and western military districts. In general, the new technology showed its best side, even taking into account the existing technical and operational limitations. The tasks of drones were determined to be reconnaissance, adjustment of fire and evaluation of the results of fire at close range.

But in the short term they should be used not only as an aircraft aerial reconnaissance. Now  experiments are underway in other areas. The creation of an engineering drone capable of operating remotely is known. In the future, the BAS-200 drone can become a promising platform for performing & nbsp; military tasks. Last year, for the first time, missiles were launched in Russia from the Termit unmanned attack helicopter, which is developed by the Kronstadt company.
