One of the participants in the 1999 Dagestan attack was sentenced to 25 years in prison

One of the gang members of Shamil Basayev and Khattab, who participated in the invasion of Dagestan in August-September 1999, Shamil Umakhanov was sentenced to 25 years in a maximum security colony.

According to UK RF, the verdict was delivered by the court taking into account the partial addition of the previously imposed sentence and has already entered into force.

Umakhanov was found guilty of participating in a gang, armed rebellion and assaulting the lives of law enforcement officers.

Chechen gang activists, numbering several thousand in 1999, carried out an armed attack on the Novolaksky district in Dagestan and captured six villages. The losses of federal forces in the battles amounted to around 300 killed and nearly 800 wounded, militants & ndash; about 2.5 thousand killed and wounded.

According to the investigation, Shamil Umakhanov took an active part in the bombing of the building of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Novolaksky district, in which were located more than 20 police officers.

In September, the court arrested the accomplices of Basayev and Khattab, two natives of the Stavropol Territory. They are suspected of banditry, armed rebellion, endangering the life of law enforcement and military personnel.
