Switzerland may refuse to use pesticides

Switzerland will hold a referendum on Sunday where citizens can vote to ban the use of pesticides. If the majority support the project, this country will become the second in the world after Bhutan to stop using chemicals to control plant pests, reports BBC News.

One of the initiative groups in Switzerland would propose to stop subsidizing farmers who use pesticides, and the other & ndash; completely ban these substances for 10 years. Alarming levels of pesticides in the water, harmful to the environment, have been identified, according to activists.

If the proposals are accepted, Switzerland will have 10 years to switch to organic farming.

Besides the issue of banning the use of pesticides, other initiatives were put to referendum, including on anti-terrorism legislation, a new tax on fossil fuels and emergency funding for Covid-19.
