Ex-Minister of Defense Arrested in Kazakhstan

Former Defense Minister of Kazakhstan Murat Bektanov has been under arrest for two months, the press service of the Nursultan Specialized Interdistrict Investigative Court reported.

Bektanov is suspected of inaction during the riots that took place at the beginning of this year.

On February 19, the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Republic opened a preliminary investigation and on February 20, Bektanov was arrested.

For neglect of official duties, which led to serious consequences, the ex-minister faces a prison term of four to eight years . Recall that he was removed from office on January 19. The Ministry of Defense was headed by Ruslan Zhaksylykov.

In early January, mass riots took place in Kazakhstan, demonstrators attacked the police and the army. On January 7, the situation was stabilized. According to the authorities, as a result of these events, 225 people died, more than 4.5 thousand were injured.
