Vilfand said if the Russians should wait until the beginning of spring

Spring this year is unlikely to be early, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The meteorologist said explained that the “severe” onset of winter does not guarantee early snowmelt.

“If a trend is noticed within a decade and a conclusion is formulated, then it's possible it's wrong,” the scientist pointed out. “To say that if winter started earlier and with cold weather, then it will end sooner is unscientific,” he added.

In the same time, Vilfand noted that December last year was actually colder than usual. But January, which is considered the coldest month in Russia, can turn out to be 3.5 to 4 degrees warmer than normal. The temperature background in February should also be slightly above or within the climatic norm.

Judging by the height of the snowdrifts, it is not worth the hard to wait for the snow to melt quickly, the forecaster said. According to him, it will be possible to more accurately predict the convergence of snow cover no earlier than mid-March.

Earlier, meteorologists reported that at the end of January in Moscow, the height of the snowdrifts will reach half a meter at a speed of 30 centimeters.
