“Transversal” science. New NTI competence centers to appear in Russia

Field National projects

The competition committee of the Ministry of Education and Science has summarized the results of the selection for the competition. Granting of grants for state support to National Technology Initiative (NTI) Competence Centers based on higher education scientific institutions and bodies.

What are end-to-end technologies?

Out of 19 applications approved by the competition committee, 5 laureates were selected. The assessment was carried out on the basis of scientific and technological potential, prospects for development in the real sector of the economy, as well as experience in the protection of intellectual rights on their developments. The concept of NTI Competence Centers is largely based on the concept of end-to-end technologies: they are game-changers in existing markets and create new industries. Examples of & mdash; artificial intelligence, big data and wireless technology. And for our time, the most important end-to-end technologies are electricity, telephony and, of course, the internet. & Nbsp;

In 2022, the NTI competence centers will begin to operate, which will create technological solutions and educational programs in hydrogen technologies, molecular engineering and bionics, the interaction technologies of confidence and technologies for the modeling and development of functional materials with specified properties. Through the National Science and Universities Project up to 650 million rubles will be allocated to each of them within five years. & nbsp;

Four of the five NTI Competence Centers that passed the competitive selection for the Year of Science and Technology represent strong regional science associations. The development of a regional network of universities and research centers is necessary to strengthen the country's economy and create new jobs.

What will the new NTI competence centers do?

Among the winning projects, two are located in Novosibirsk. In the first of these, scientists will improve hydrogen technologies for transport and the fuel and energy complex, in the second & mdash; will be engaged in creating improved materials for various industries. & nbsp;

Hydrogen energy & mdash; a very promising industry. In the future, cars using hydrogen as fuel will be in demand just like electric cars. This will reduce the amount of harmful emissions to the atmosphere, because when this gas is burned, only water vapor is formed. NTI Competence Center for Hydrogen Technologies is scheduled to open at the Catalysis Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Industrial technologies for producing hydrogen with a low carbon footprint will be developed here, and the main task of the Center will be the development of technologies for the construction of hydrogen refueling stations. & Nbsp;

The second grant went to Novosibirsk State University. The NTI Competence Center “ Technologies for the modeling and development of functional materials with specified properties '' new materials will be created & mdash; their structure can be controlled at the micro level, and the production of the materials themselves will be organized using digital methods. The range of their application is very wide & mdash; aeronautical and space industries, consumer market segment, etc. & nbsp;

The third winner was Samara State Medical University (SamSMU). Based on the results of the competition committee, the NTI competence center “ Bionic Engineering in Medicine '' will be open there. Bioengineering & mdash; one of the key business areas of this university. The bioimplants developed and patented by its scientists are used in dentistry, traumatology, otolaryngology and cosmetology. This year, for the first time in Russia, an operation was performed using stents created at the university. Today, the consortium that will implement the NTI Competence Center program includes 10 leading universities, three RAS institutes, 18 companies and three service organizations. And the core of the consortium & mdash; SamSMU.

As part of the development of the SamSMU Competence Center in 2022 & ndash; 2026. The implementation of a number of projects on bionic engineering in medicine is planned. An infrastructure will also be created for the development of biomedicine projects for ambitious young scientists. It will include a laboratory for 3D modeling of the human body, a center for biomedical cellular products, a distributed laboratory for the design of bioprostheses, and a design laboratory for the “smart”. clothes.

In addition, during the Year of Science and Technology, Samara State Medical University became one of the universities participating in the Priority 2030 program along with the track “ Territorial and (or) industrial leadership ''. The purpose of this program is & mdash; to form a group of universities that will become leaders in the creation of new scientific knowledge, technologies and developments to be implemented in the Russian economy and social sphere. Universities participating in the program will develop and disseminate best practices in research, innovation and educational activities throughout the higher education system.

Two more winners of the Ministry of Education & mdash; NTI Competence Center in Molecular Engineering in Life Sciences (it will be opened on the basis of the Federal Research Center “ Fundamental Foundations of Biotechnology '' of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and the NTI Competence Center in the direction of “ Trusted Interaction Technologies '' (at Tomsk State University of Radio and Control Systems).

What has already been done by the existing Centers?

Now thanks to the national 'Sciences and Universities' project in the country, the activities of 16 NTI competence centers are funded. All of them are focused on creating disruptive technologies in various sectors of the economy.

For example, in the NTI Competence Center on the basis of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), wireless communication technologies and the Internet of Things are being developed. Among the projects already implemented & mdash; Autonomous private 5G network built in a Russian communication station. It will allow large companies to build their own 5G networks for industry, production and transportation of oil, gas, coal and other minerals. Today, Skoltech scientists are developing algorithms and methods for the 6G communication standard. It will be able to transfer huge amounts of data with a latency limit of just one microsecond. This will make possible, for example, unmanned public transport, and internet connection will occur at gigantic speeds.

Last year at Moscow State Technical University. N.E. Bauman, the Competence Center “ Digital Materials Science: New Materials and Substances '' has been created. It aims to 'fast' and 'through' design, testing and application of new materials and substances. Among the developments of the Center & mdash; digital technology for the design of finished products from thermoplastic prepregs. Prepregs are semi-finished composite materials, which are sheets of woven or non-woven fibrous materials impregnated with polymer binders. This is for example the famous carbon, as well as kevlar. The project of the Competence Center of Moscow State Technical University N.E. Bauman assumes the development of a technology for the manufacture of thermoplastic prepregs based on novel heat-resistant structural polymers. They will find applications in industries as strategically important as aviation and rockets. & Nbsp;

A promising project of the center is the development of bioabsorbable materials which dissolve harmlessly in the body and are replaced by living tissue. They will be in demand when creating prostheses, as well as in complex bone fractures.
