The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation will send Il-38 and Il-38N anti-submarine planes to patrol the circumpolar territories, writes the Izvestia newspaper.
It is noted that now they are sometimes used to patrol the Northern Sea Route. From now on, the Il-38 and Il-38 will operate in regions further north, notably near the North Pole.
According to department sources, in addition to military tasks, the devices will carry out humanitarian operations.
The subject of Arctic development was discussed during talks in Geneva by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Joe Biden.
After the summit, Putin said that the development of these spaces and the Northern Sea Route are of great interest to the economies of many states. He pointed out that Washington's concern about an increased Russian presence in the region is unfounded.
