What is the Russian anti-tank complex “Kornet-D1”?

The latest airborne self-propelled anti-tank missile system “Kornet-D1” for the Russian Airborne Forces has begun final firing tests, and the car is also undergoing laboratory and road tests. AiF.ru found out the features of this complex and is it able to withstand the advertised American Javelin.

Broadcasting Company “Kornet-D1” developed at the Instrument Design Bureau im. Academician Shipunov. These weapons are used to destroy armored targets, including those equipped with reactive armor. Its modern version is capable of destroying air targets. It is assumed that the Kornet-D1 complexes will enter the Russian troops before the middle of the year 2023.

Not"Tiger" single

At the moment, the complex is being created for two variants of transporters: the wheelbase of the Tigr-M armored car; and tracked base of the BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle. ATGM “Kornet-D1” developed for the benefit of anti-tank artillery units of the airborne forces. “Cornet-D1” for the airborne forces is placed on the BMD-4M chassis, which allows it to be parachuted. One of the  features — it is the possibility of parachuting with the crew.

According to laser beam

According to the developers, the complex was created practically from scratch, from the Cornet  only the in-flight missile control system remained there. The combat vehicle has two automated launchers, each of which can steer its own target, even though they are spaced apart in range, forward and height. The missile is guided by a laser beam. The fire can be fired in all weather conditions and at different times of the day. The automatic tracking machine allows you to direct missiles to the target without the participation of the operator. In addition, the complex provides for a remote ATGM launcher, which can be used simultaneously with automated launchers.

Powerful and long-range

Firing range “Cornet-D1” is respectively eight and ten kilometers for anti-tank missiles with tandem and thermobaric cumulative warheads, while in previous versions it is 5.5 km. In the second case, the missile is also capable of hitting low-speed air targets, including drones, for this, remote detonation is used.

The platoon commander's vehicle was also developed separately. In addition to launchers, it is equipped with reconnaissance and target designation equipment. To operate the new complex, it will be necessary to retrain gunners, as well as commanders of vehicles and combat units. Now this is actively continuing at the Omsk Airborne Training Center. For the love of “Cornet-D1” the center has doubled cadet registration and more than doubled the list of military registration specialties.

Competition with Javelin

The firing range of the Russian ATGM “Kornet-D1”  4 times greater than the firing range of the Javelin (it has this parameter of 2.5 kilometers). The armor protection of the Russian design is also better: 1150 millimeters against 800-900 for the American ATGM. It's time to launch — this is another advantage of the Kornet-D1. Its operator, as soon as he locates the target, can immediately fire. Javelin needs about 30 seconds before launch for the homing head to cool down, then it's ready to track the target and aim the missile at it.

The main difference— They are guidance systems. The flight of the “Kornet-D1” rocket corrected using a laser beam directed from the launcher to the sensor located in the tail of the missile until the target is hit. In addition, the theft can be corrected at any time, such a system being less susceptible to interference. The downside is that the shooter must stay at the launch site before hitting.

The Javelin's homing head is located within the missile itself. It determines the target by  infrared and  thermal radiation, it allows you to implement the “shoot and forget” principle, which increases the chances of surviving and hiding from a retaliatory strike for the shooter. Javelin guidance is susceptible to interference: a strong smoke screen or special metallic spray will blind the “Smart US Missile”.

The Javelin can only fire a single missile at a target, which in some cases can reduce the effectiveness of its use. U ATGM “Kornet-D1” to combat  active defense systems with which tanks are equipped,  self-propelled versions of the complexes provide for the “Tandem” mode: two missiles are fired with a difference of less than ;one second, and if the first missile is disoriented by active protection, then the second will pierce the armor of the “naked” Char.

It is also significant that the Javelin is the most expensive anti-tank missile system in history. According to various sources, its cost with a set of six missiles ranges from 600 thousand dollars to almost 1.5 million. Russian ATGM “Kornet-D1” at least 7 times cheaper.
